The Rocky Point sugar cane area is one of the
last remaining cane-growing areas between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Maintaining water quality, especially in relation to the disposal of wastewater
and the management of acid sulfate soils is a key environmental issues in this
sensitive area that supports significant wetlands, mangroves and estuaries.
On
a visit to a cane farm, you will inspect an acid sulfate soil (Hydrosol) and experiments
in the greenhouse gas budget of cane lands.
Older experimental work to control acid groundwater will also be
discussed. An additional highlight of this tour will be a visit to a bush
reserve where hopefully you will be able to see koalas in their natural habitat.
