East of Brisbane, the Bayside area includes a wide
range of landscapes on geologies such as basalt, metamorphic and coastal
deposits. The tour will visit the Redland Research Station, a major centre for
research into vegetables, fruits and ornamental crops in Queensland. One third of the station consists of Ferrosol
soils, which are the prime horticultural soil of the area and from which the
Redlands District takes its name. Following this, the tour will visit the
Carbrook Wetlands Aggregation.
A significant proportion of the wetlands in South East Queensland have been
disturbed through human impacts. The Carbrook Wetlands Aggregation contains
some of the largest remaining segments of paperbark (Melaleuca) species along
the coast of South East Queensland. The tour will be stopping at Carbrook
Conservation Park to discuss the geomorphology of the area and work that has been
conducted on wetland soils.
Finally the tour will visit one of South East Queensland's wineries to discuss issues
on soil management in viticulture both within Australia and overseas.
