Date: Saturday 7 August - 8.30 am - 3.00 pm
Cost: $80.00 per person
Restrictions: None
We will visit Toohey Forest Park - an ‘island of
forested country' in the middle of suburbia, just 11 km from the CBD. The open
eucalypt/dry-sclerophyll forest has developed on shallow infertile soils. A
soil profile will be inspected and research on nutrient and carbon cycling in the
forest (and other areas of South East Queensland) will be described.
Forest
Rangers will discuss characteristics of the bushland and some of the challenges
associated with urban forest management. The management impacts on such things
as biodiversity will also be explored. The innovative Griffith University
EcoCentre and associated Education Centre will be inspected, enabling excursion
participants to get ‘up close and personal' with some of the native wildlife.
This tour will conclude after lunch in the early afternoon.
