Only 30
minutes west of Brisbane is a large historical coal mining area. Only a few
active open cut mines remain and one of these will be visited during this full
day tour. Rehabilitation of coal mine spoil is a topic of much research in
Queensland. Old mine voids in the district have been put to use for a number of
purposes, including disposal of toxic waste. Rapid urban development in the area,
is encountering a number of landscape issues, including land subsidence and
dispersive soils.
The nearby highly productive rural landscapes include a number
of interesting soils, including an acid clay growing Melaleuca spp.
