Judging Criteria

The projects will be judged on the following criteria:

TOPIC

  • Has the student clearly identified the soil science issue they have investigated?
  • Has the student demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the soil science issue they have investigated?


SCIENTIFIC PROCESS

Evidence of ownership

  • Has the student shown evidence from the report and journal that they have completed the investigation and acknowledged assistance given?


Aim
Hypothesis

  • Has the student clearly stated a valid researchable question based on the student's own research? 
  • Has the student proposed and justified a reasonable hypothesis?

Logical Scientific Procedure

  • Has the student designed, assessed and modified (if necessary) and carried out their own experimental design with attention to accuracy and precision?
  • Has the student followed a logical and appropriate process, used valid scientific controls with replication where appropriate?
  • Has the student demonstrated thoroughness and persistence in their approach to their project?

Data
 
  • Has the student determined the type of data to be collected and identified procedures for validating the authenticity and reliability of the data?
  • Has the student used valid data collection methods and effectively employed appropriate technologies?

Results


  • Has the student shown that the results were gathered accurately and comprehensively?
  • Has the student presented the information using formats that demonstrate results, relationships and sources clearly, accurately and succinctly?

Interpretation of Results

  • Has the student interpreted the results in a valid and logical way?
  • Has the student assessed the accuracy and relevance of any measurements and calculations and identified trends and anomalies (secondary only)?


Conclusion

  • Is there adequate data to support the conclusion?
  • Is the conclusion consistent with the aim of the investigation?

SKILL

Appropriate Use of Materials

  • Has the student demonstrated safe and effective use of materials and equipment?
     

COMMUNICATION

Visual Presentation

  • Is the project visually appealing, creative and easy to follow?

Readability

  • Is the text well written and easily understood?

Appropriate Use of Illustrations

  • Have illustrations/diagrams/maps, etc. been used to convey information in a clear and interesting way?
